i have to say i thoroughly enjoyed this book. but, i used it at a wierd time in my reading, towards the end. so i had to read the companion by itself for awhile…nonetheless, do not buy this if you are looking for a reason why Pynchon wrote what he wrote. because no one will ever know. and Pynchon sure won’t tell. remember: these are just ideas about what others think, not TRP.

Yep. Very well put together collection of stuff you’ll need — even if you think you don’t — to get through Gravity’s Rainbow proper. Sure you can fly solo, naked, hungry … but this gives you a bit of support as you swim through. Just a few pivots and landings to catch your breath. Although not essential, it can help. Fer sher.

Regretfully this book is out of print. It should be required reading for any serious reader of Gravity’s Rainbow. What I’d like to recommend is that a publisher pick this up and produce an annotated edition of the novel with this book as the source.

The amount of research that must have gone into this book is mind-boggling. It provides background and clues on most if not all of the allusions, puzzles, etc. contained in the novel. The only annoying thing is that Weisenburger gives away the ending of the novel at the beginning of his book.

This guide goes practically line by line to give insight and understanding that are impossible in most passages. It is indispensible! I was finally able to relax and enjoy GR because the nitty-gritty work was already done. Thank you Mr. Weisenburger!
